The Big Apple and a Hershey Bar

Monday we drove from Boston area down to New York City aka The Big Apple.  We stayed at the Newark Airport and rode the train in to New York City on Tuesday.  Our first stop was the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  What an amazing site to see!  Lady Liberty is being restored, so we were limited to seeing her outsides, but to think that she is covered in a layer of copper two pennies thick 1/10 of an inch.  The frame is stainless steel and very strong to endure the winds and the weather in the harbor.  Below are the pics of our ferry ride over to see her.  Ellis Island was impressive as well because we both had relatives who spent time going through the immigration process there.

The New York Skyline from the ferry boat.  As you can see it was a cloudy light rain day.
Tom is excited to be approaching Liberty Island.
After the ferry ride we walked from Battery Park to Chinatown for dinner.  Along the way we got a feel for the city and walked past St. Patricks Cathedral and St. Paul's Chapel.  As you can see after dinner we rode the subway to Times Square.  We then walked to Penn Station where we boarded the train for Newark.

When we woke up this am, it was raining in NYC so we decided to hit the road and head on down the road towards Lynchburg, VA our next destination.  Along the way we stopped at the Hershey Chocolate World where we went on several tours.
Tom fits right in with the Hershey characters above the entrance.
Here they are making chocolate bars

After the chocolate making tour we went on a trolley tour of the town seeing the wonderful school that Mr. Hershey created for needy children, what an amazing school.  Here's a link if you want to read more about it:  http://www.mhs-pa.org/history.  Mr. Hershey failed 4 times on business attempts, then finally succeeded  with his chocolate making we know as Hershey Chocolate.  He created the town for his employees, he was a very inspiring man.

These beautiful flowers were outside  Chocolate World.

During the tour we saw the hershey kiss shaped light fixtures on the lampposts.

Also at the Hershey compound they were having an Antique Car and parts show.  Here is a picture of a model that a man was selling of a 50's or 60's gas station and the cars there getting gas or repairs.

Here are pictures we took while walking around the beautiful Hershey Gardens...enjoy!

And Tom got a picture of a small bird feeding on birdseed in the garden as well.
